The Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company

The Dancers' Cut

A birthday celebration

This is power and grace up-close and intimate. Zoom in and revel in the detail, sweaty and sensual, as bodies and cultures collide.

See the bite-sized best bits from twenty years of Shobana Jeyasingh choreography, a creative force that has shaped so much of UK dance today. But it's not cut and paste. These fierce solos, intricate duets and passionate trios have a story to tell. It's a human story about meetings and partings, love and longing - and hatred as persistent as the monsoon rain.

This is dance on the inside. Film combines with live performance to show us the dancers' take on the work. Discover what they bring to the pieces and how in turn Jeyasingh unique style has shaped their own creative lives.

Faultline & Exit No Exit

An energetic double bill of Dance, Film and Sound

Multi-lingual movement, film and a powerful score of electronic and vocal music evokes the current tensions of British-Asian youth. Faultline's imagery is inspired by the mix of languages and slang in Gautam Malkani's book Londonstani (nominated for the Commonwealth Writers' Best First Book Award 2007).

Faultline features an original score by contemporary sonic artist Scanner (past collaborators include Bryan Ferry and The Royal Ballet), with additional composition for live voice by Errollyn Wallen, sung by classical soprano Patricia Rozario. Atmospheric film footage of edgy young men was shot on location in Southall and Brick Lane by conceptual artist Pete Gomes.

The anticipation of entrances and impossibility of easy exits propel the characters in this dramatic piece where a woman in a cocktail dress plays out her own story.

Hauntingly atmospheric, Exit no Exit gains from the 'muscular lyricism' (The Guardian) of iconic composer Michael Nyman in a score enriched by the smooth sounds of live bass clarinet played live by Andy Keenan.

The stage is bathed in fluid projections created by cutting edge filmmaker Nichola Bruce (listed as one of the top 10 digital directors to watch by Variety magazine) and evocatively lit by leading British designer Lucy Carter.
